Ukraine: Encounter Culture in Eastern Europe

AAG wants to not only promote cultural exchange through our programs, but also provide a break to travel the world virtually.  Our goal is to give you the opportunity to learn more about a featured country with whom we are establishing and creating stronger business, political and human ties. This month we are featuring Ukraine.

Ukraine 3In the middle of January, two of AAG Representatives and four Host Companies traveled to Ukraine for a Summer Work Travel International Recruitment Fair. Below you will see some pictures taken while on their Cultural Day. What is a Cultural Day you ask? Well, it is when our Host Company representatives have a chance to be totally immersed in the local culture; learning about food, customs, history, architecture,  and even learn a few new words.

Ukraine, is a country in Eastern Europe and first inhabited at least 44,000 years ago.  The country has been influenced by many nations and was opposed, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, but remained otherwise divided until is consolidation into a Soviet republic in the 20th century and then became an independent nation in 1991. Ukraine is one of the largest countries situated in Europe. Its geography varies greatly from one region to the other everything from lowlands, coast land, grasslands, forests and alpine like areas.

The climate can be described as dry and continental influenced climate with warm, dry summers and fairly severe winters. January is the coldest month with daytime temperatures usually around 32°F but in some cases winter months can be quite colder with temperatures far below zero, about -4°F or lower.

Ukraine 4Traditional Ukrainian restaurants will offer a варе́ники (varenyky), which are dumplings stuffed with a variety of sweet and savory fillings. Another wonderful staple dishes is борщ (borsch) and perfect for cold winter days accompanied with either a cold pyro (beer) or horika (vodka).
